SOUTHALL, William (1839-1900)
CL Dudley 1888-1900
Originally a member of the local library committee and then the successor to the first Chief, C F Mackmain, he was the first member of a remarkable library dynasty which was hardly possible save when the person in office originally received an inclusive salary from which he paid his staff and, naturally enough, looked first to his own family. He was succeeded, firstly, by his daughter Jennie from 1900 until her death in 1913, her sister, Alice, being her assistant until her own death in 1910. 'Louie', another sister, who acted as Deputy from 1910, became Chief in 1913 and held office until 1927. Her sister, and Deputy since 1913, Margaret (1879-1962) served as Chief from 1927 until retiring in 1946 when the Southall dynasty of DUDLEY came to an end.
b. 18.9.1839 Dudley
4 years assistant at Dudley prior to being CL
(YB 1897, 145)
